The Mambo Maestro: 1949-62

Dámaso Pérez Prado was the undisputed King of the Mambo and a legendary post-war cultural icon whose vibrant music ignited a global Latin dance craze. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1916, Prado absorbed classic piano training before moving to Havana, where he began fusing traditional rumba rhythms with the sophisticated, hard-swinging arrangements of American jazz. After facing resistance from conservative traditionalists, he relocated to Mexico City and formed his own big band, eventually signing with RCA. His fiery 1949 and 1950 recordings served as the catalyst for the explosive mambo craze across the United States. Though his tight, highly orchestrated arrangements left little room for on-stage improvisation, they featured piercing high-register trumpets, undulating saxophones, atmospheric organ touches, and trademark vocal grunts that captivated dancers worldwide. This collection celebrates the peak years of his groundbreaking recording career, capturing the infectious rhythm, theatrical brilliance, and irresistible energy of a true musical pioneer.
