Why Do Fools Fall In Love? The Gee Singles 1956-57

Their breakthrough came when producer George Goldner signed the group to his Gee label. Released in late 1955, ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love’ became a major hit in 1956, topping the American R&B chart and reaching No. 6 on the pop chart. Lymon was still only thirteen, yet his spirited performance helped establish a new sound for a generation of young listeners. The success was followed by a remarkable run of recordings, including ‘Please Be Mine’, ‘I Want You to Be My Girl’, ‘I Promise to Remember’ and ‘Who Can Explain?’. Their repertoire moved effortlessly between exuberant rock ’n’ roll, romantic ballads and sophisticated vocal harmonies. ‘I’m Not a Juvenile Delinquent’ and ‘Baby Baby’ brought the group to cinema audiences through the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock, while their 1957 British tour included celebrated performances at the London Palladium. As Lymon’s career moved towards solo stardom, the original group’s brief period together came to an end. Nevertheless, his distinctive vocal style left a lasting mark on popular music, influencing generations of singers and vocal groups. His story remains inseparable from the birth of teenage rock ’n’ roll and the extraordinary cultural changes of the 1950s.
