AI in Ophthalmology

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping healthcare, and ophthalmology stands at the forefront of this evolution. From screening and diagnosis to surgical planning, workflow optimisation, and population-based eye care, AI is redefining how ophthalmologists deliver precision, efficiency, and equitable care. As these technologies become integral to clinical practice, every eye care professional must be cognizant of not only their capabilities but also their limitations, ethical implications, and practical implementation.

This book is a comprehensive, clinically focused guide designed to bridge the gap between emerging AI technologies and day-to-day ophthalmic practice. Rather than presenting AI as a futuristic concept, this book demonstrates how it can be responsibly integrated into real-world clinical decision-making, public health programs, research, and surgical care. It uniquely combines specialty-specific applications with discussions on implementation, interdisciplinary collaborations, regulatory frameworks, and the evolving role of the ophthalmologist in an AI-enabled healthcare ecosystem.
