The Science of Family Occupations

The Science of Family Occupations takes an occupational lens on the diverse aspects of family life, providing a detailed examination of its unfolding across different family units in dynamic settings through the lifespan, and offering practical tools to guide budding clinicians or seasoned practitioners toward family-centered practice.

Grounded in the core principles of occupational science, the book begins by positing an insightful new theory: the Science of Family Occupations (SoFO), rooted in implementation science and lived experiences, and through which family living, both enriching and challenging, can be better understood. Following the introduction of SoFO, the chapters highlight how family occupations change over time, and how individuals find meaning within them. The book then ties theory to practice, providing practitioners working with families a semi-structured assessment and interview, along with clear processes for interventions to achieve tangible collective family occupational outcomes. This is complemented by a series of vignettes from renowned and experienced practitioners.

The first book to take an occupational perspective on the diversity of family life and practice, it will be essential reading for students and practitioners in occupational therapy, social work, and other disciplines who work with family units.

Included with the text are online supplemental materials featuring reflective questions for each chapter, reflective vignettes, and more. Available at www.routledge.com/9781041258360
