Counselling and Language Impairment

This essential resource is a ‘one stop shop’ about counselling for adults experiencing a communication impairment after brain injury. Grounded in a strong evidence-base, it describes common language and communicative problems that emerge in the therapeutic setting, as well as strategies for how to manage them.

The book sets the foundation by taking the reader through the basics of human communication and brain injury. It then unpicks the complexity of acquired language impairments and how these present in the clinic, offering ways to approach working with clients experiencing a change in their communication. It merges this understanding with a range of therapeutic approaches to offer clinicians a comprehensive guide to supporting these clients with a focus on the healing influence of a therapeutic relationship and human compassion. The book includes activities, pause for thought and reflective moments, and case studies to bring the topic to life.

This book is written for psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health practitioners with little or no understanding of communication impairments such as aphasia. It provides necessary guidance to upskill these clinicians on how to offer counselling to adults who have been affected by a brain injury or neurological disorder.
