Tradition in Plato

This volume, originally published in Spanish, explores a longstanding problem: tradition as conceived, interpreted, and transmitted by Plato in his works.

It explores a range of themes in oral tradition that are generally considered in isolation, including mythology, poetic tradition, archaeology, customs, unwritten laws and rumour, and examines how these are reflected in the work of Plato. It illustrates the anthropological changes that took place in Greece following the Peloponnesian War, particularly in Athens, through the lens of Plato’s works, and explores how these changes impacted the genres of history and philosophy.

Updated to include the most recent historiography, this English edition makes Tradition in Plato available to English-speaking students and scholars of Plato working in ancient history, ancient philosophy, classical studies and anthropology.
