The Art of Communicating Science

Blending applied theatre techniques with science communication, this book introduces an arts-based methodology that helps individuals build communication skills and connect across differences.

Through participatory exercises rooted in improvisation, role play, and deep listening, the book equips readers with tools to catalyze dialogue, build trust, and engage meaningfully with others. It explores how listening closely and seeing the world from another’s perspective shifts science communication to genuine conversation, collaboration, and potential co-creation of knowledge. The authors focus on joyful and authentic science communication that is personal, direct, spontaneous, responsive, and emotionally vivid. Instructions for supporting exercises empower readers to put the approach into practice, and a chapter on facilitation of workshops provides essential guidance.

This book guides facilitators, scientists, researchers, and students through the processes of developing effective learning sequences for specific communication goals and can be used as a springboard to develop science communication programs.
