Cairo, the ‘Mother of the World,’ has long captivated observers with its vibrant history and monumental architecture. Yet, the pivotal era of the Egyptian monarchy – spanning from the fl awed 1922 declaration of independence to the Free Officers’ movement in July 1952 – remains remarkably understudied. To remedy that lacuna, Royal Cairo: Architecture, Culture, and Urbanism under the Monarchy explores how the city was shaped, physically, culturally, and socially. during these paradoxical decades of formal independence and lingering British colonial control.
While subsequent republican narratives often overshadow this period, characterizing it as an externally influenced era of decadence, this book argues that the monarchy laid the foundations of the modern city we know today. Although the preceding Khedival period established central Cairo’s general physical plan, it was the royal period that imbued the city with its definitive architectural identity and flourishing urban culture. Bringing together diverse perspectives, this edited volume interrogates the tension between the monarchy as a ruling institution and Cairo as a multifaceted metropolis. The contributors chart the city’s transformation through its massive urban expansion into such districts as Zamalek, Maadi, and Heliopolis, while examining elite architectural styles, systemic housing inequalities, and the political discourse behind its public statues.
Beyond the built environment, the book delves into Cairo’s emergence as a vibrant cosmopolitan hub. It explores the profound societal impacts of early national radio, the golden age of Egyptian cinema, a dynamic national press, and the nuances of Francophone elite culture. It also highlights shifting social dynamics such as the expanding presence of women in public spaces and the evolution of Cairene memorials and cemeteries. Culminating with an examination of the 1952 Great Cairo Fire, which irrevocably altered modern Egyptian history and paved the way for a new republic, this book challenges traditional historical narratives. Royal Cairo is essential for those fascinated by the complex interplay of power, identity, and the built environment.
