At the Edges of the Jewish World

At the Edges of the Jewish World: Varieties of Experience explores the diverse histories, identities, and experiences of Jewish communities situated beyond the conventional boundaries of the Jewish world.

Bringing together contributions from an international group of scholars, this edited volume examines Jewish communities across Africa, Asia, and the Americas whose histories and identities challenge traditional definitions of Jewishness. Through a series of interdisciplinary case studies, the book explores themes including identity, law, history, genetics, colonialism, slavery, race, and multicultural hybridity, offering fresh perspectives on the diversity of the Jewish experience. Published in honor of the pioneering scholar Tudor Parfitt, the volume builds upon his influential work while highlighting the lasting impact of his scholarship across Jewish studies, history, anthropology, and related fields.

This book will appeal to students and scholars of Jewish studies, Middle East studies, history, anthropology, religious studies, and diaspora studies, as well as readers interested in questions of identity, migration, race, and the global diversity of Jewish communities.
