Solutions Journalism

Bringing together the expertise of practicing journalists, scholars, and educators, this book offers a thorough guide to understanding and practicing solutions journalism—a rigorous approach to reporting that investigates how people are responding to social problems, not just the problems themselves.

With audiences tuning out, trust in news declining, and reporters burning out under increasing pressures, solutions journalism offers a concrete response to some of journalism’s most pressing challenges. Used by newsrooms and taught in journalism schools worldwide, solutions journalism counters negativity bias and helps journalists provide more complete, constructive coverage of the world around them. This book guides students and working journalists through how to identify and report solutions stories, conduct constructive interviews, report equitably across communities, and apply the approach to photo, audio, and video journalism. Real-world examples from newsrooms across multiple continents illustrate best practices, while original interviews with practitioners in Africa, Latin America, and Asia reveal how solutions journalism is being adapted and practiced far beyond its Western origins.

As the first comprehensive textbook devoted to this growing journalistic approach, Solutions Journalism is essential reading for journalism students, educators, and working journalists seeking to understand and put solutions journalism into practice.
