The Author-Driven Classroom

Are you looking for a new way to teach literature in your ELA classroom that includes the author’s lives and choices, as opposed to ignoring them?

The Author-Driven Classroom presents a comprehensive framework for author-centered literary instruction in secondary English language arts. Rather than treating authors as background information or reducing literary study to biography, the book argues that authors function as human, historical, and creative presences whose lives, identities, and craft choices can deepen students’ literary reasoning. Drawing on classroom experience, qualitative research, sociocultural theory, reader-response scholarship, and disciplinary literacy, the book introduces the Author Research Cycle (ARC), a flexible framework for transforming author knowledge into sustained literary inquiry. Through practical classroom examples, reflection prompts, and instructional strategies, readers learn how biography, historical context, literary craft, and textual analysis can work together to foster curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, and close reading.

Written for English teachers, teacher candidates, teacher educators, instructional coaches, and curriculum leaders, The Author-Driven Classroom offers a humane and practical vision of literature instruction that restores authors to the center of meaningful literary study.
