The Struggle for Respect in Urban Classrooms

This book offers a nuanced investigation of how respect is co-produced in urban educational settings through a multi-year ethnographic study at a diverse US middle school.

Drawing on over 400 hours of participant observation and 52 interviews with teachers and students, it reveals the contested and negotiated meanings of respect in classroom interactions. The author develops three theoretical concepts for understanding how mutually respectful classroom cultures are created and sustained: the "reprisal process," which reconceptualizes perceived student defiance as strategic face-saving responses to being shamed, "school cred" and "classroom capital.”

By shifting from a culture of control to a humanizing pedagogy, the author argues that educators must reject deficit ideologies and neighborhood stigma that pathologize urban youth in favor of approaches that co-construct respectful and inclusive classroom environments. Methodologically, it demonstrates the potential of sustained ethnographic engagement for understanding micro-level classroom dynamics and their broader implications for educational equity. Combining theory with actionable examples and advice for educators, the book concludes with five evidence-based strategies for fostering mutual recognition, respect, and conflict mitigation.
