Artificial Intelligence and Agricultural Transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa

This volume explores AI as an intervention in Sub-Saharan Africa agriculture and food systems. It seeks to generate a nuanced, multidisciplinary understanding of how AI contributes to inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable development, while also critically examining the unintended consequences and structural barriers. Special attention is given to smallholder farmers, rural women, youth, and marginalised populations, who are most affected by food insecurity but often excluded from digital transformation processes. By drawing from case studies, empirical research, and theoretical perspectives, it provides a comprehensive and policy-relevant resource for scholars, policymakers, development practitioners, and agritech innovators seeking to navigate the complex intersection of AI, agriculture, and development in Africa.
