Fungal Matters for Bio-Based Design

Fungal Matters for Bio-Based Design opens a world of material possibility through partnership with some of Earth’s most fascinating organisms: fungi.

Combining accessible mycological science with hands-on applications, step-by-step instructions, stunning visuals, and in-depth scientific insights, this comprehensive resource invites you to partner with fungi as teachers, companions and co-creators. Whether you’re experimenting with your first mycelium composite project or perfecting advanced biofabrication techniques, this resource will help you learn, create and find inspiration in this fascinating field. Co-authored by bio-artist and ecological storyteller Catherine Euale and bio-material researcher and designer Jessica Dias, this book grounds material science in ecological philosophy, sensory storytelling and inspiring global case studies. Featuring the work of artists and designers such as Annah-Ololade Sangosanya, Sasha Fishman and Lera Niemackl, as well as contributions from Open Fung, MycoHAB and many others, Fungal Matters for Bio-Based Design celebrates the many rich cultural and ecological perspectives on the art of working with fungal materials.

This practical guide is intended for designers, artists, makers, material researchers, and curious beginners alike. Together we’ll cultivate materials and reimagine relationships with the living world and the built environment.
