Crossing The Creek

Navigating two worlds is never easy. On colonial Australia’s pastoral frontier, three lives intertwine in a story of dispossession, identity and belonging.

Twyla, an Aboriginal child separated from family and suffering memory loss, is forced to work as a domestic servant on a property in north-west NSW, where she takes refuge at the creek and finds a friend and protector in Gamilaraay station hand, Garruu.

Sheep overseer Tom, an emancipist and former Kidderminster carpet weaver, alienated geographically and by the settler violence around him, hungers for family, friends and justice.

When Garruu is wrongfully arrested, Twyla and Tom’s courage is tested as they stand up for justice in the face of intense racism.

Weaving together a vivid sense of Country, and laced with Gamilaraay language, Crossing the Creek is a love story between a man, a woman and a place, and also important truth-telling through fiction.
