Stone Wall: An Autobiography

This pioneering lesbian autobiography, published in 1930, is a remarkably candid recollection of love and self-discovery between women during an era when such stories were nearly invisible. The time is coming when man's love for man and woman's love for woman will be studied and understood as it never has been in the past. The Stone Wall, penned by Ruth Fuller Field under the pseudonym Mary Casal, is a remarkably candid memoir of love, yearning, and self-discovery between women. From her adolescent, rough-and-tumble years growing up with her brothers, to her romance with Juno, the love who shaped her adult years, Casal shares her life with pride and defiance. Offering a glimpse into queer life decades before the uprising at The Stonewall Inn, Field's voice resonates with the courage that later generations would come to embrace as pride. AUTHOR: Mary Casal was the pen name for Ruth Feller Field, a lesbian author in the early 1900s. She held several jobs throughout her life, including schoolteacher, children's toy entrepreneur, and secretary of the California Chamber of Commerce. Her autobiography was published in 1930 under a pen name in order to protect herself and those closest to her.
