The Early Churchill: Fall and Rise 1918-1929 picks up Winston Churchill's story at the moment the guns fell silent on 11 November 1918. Peace, however, brought neither stability nor clarity. Britain emerged from the First World War victorious but strained, facing economic turmoil, industrial unrest, and the spectre of Bolshevism. It was into this unsettled landscape that Churchill stepped as Secretary of State for War and Air, beginning another phase of his unpredictable 'snakes and ladders' political career. The narrative follows Churchill as he confronts immediate post war crises: reforming a chaotic demobilisation scheme, managing mutinies, and navigating the volatile politics of Red Clydeside. His measured handling of domestic unrest contrasted sharply with his uncompromising hostility to Bolshevism abroad, culminating in the ill fated Allied intervention in Russia - an episode that damaged both his judgement and his standing. From there, the book traces Churchill's influence across the crumbling former Ottoman Empire and revolutionary Ireland. As Colonial Secretary, he shaped the 1921 Cairo settlement and helped negotiate the Anglo Irish Treaty, decisions whose consequences still reverberate. His belligerent stance during the Chanak Crisis helped bring down the Lloyd George Coalition, ending his second political career. Churchill's return in 1924 as Chancellor of the Exchequer brought triumph and disaster in equal measure. His decision to restore the Gold Standard triggered an industrial crisis and contributed to the General Strike of 1926, further isolating him from labour and liberal opinion. By 1929, despite decades at the heart of government, he once again found himself out of office - this time seemingly for good. This is the story of Churchill's most turbulent decade: a period of ambition, misjudgement, innovation, and controversy that shaped the statesman he would later become.
