The Chess Middlegame In The 21st Century

The Chess Middlegame in the 21st Century is designed primarily to help club players of all ages—especially ambitious young players—improve their overall standard of play. While its main focus is the modern theory of the middlegame, the book also explores the connections between openings, middlegames, and endgames, reflecting the integrated nature of chess.

Organized into eight major sections, the book traces the evolution of chess thought from its origins to the present day before examining key themes such as pawn structures, strategy, dynamics, calculation, material imbalances, technique, and the influence of modern engines on contemporary chess understanding.

Through carefully selected games, practical examples, and numerous exercises, readers are encouraged to develop essential skills such as identifying candidate moves, calculating variations, evaluating positions, and formulating plans. Many of the featured middlegame concepts are linked to specific opening systems, making the material directly relevant for players looking to strengthen their repertoire.

Suitable for both self-study and classroom instruction, the book serves as a practical training manual for players seeking to understand how modern chess is played and taught in the engine era. An extensive exercise index further enhances its value as a resource for coaches and trainers.
