Musicianship: Theory & Construction for the Contemporary Sonic Architect presents music theory not as a collection of inherited rules to memorize, but as a map of musical relationships waiting to be explored. Beginning with the two fundamental materials of music—notes and beats—it reveals rhythm, melody, harmony, and form as interconnected systems that can be counted, heard, constructed, and transformed.

Rhythm begins with the relationship between strong and weak beats and expands through subdivision, syncopation, permutation, swing, tuplets, odd groupings, and the architecture of contemporary grooves. Melodic ideas are reduced to interval, direction, repetition, contour, and rhythmic placement, demonstrating how a finite collection of notes can generate an extraordinary range of recognizable shapes and emotional effects.

Harmony develops deductively from intervals into triads, seventh chords, upper extensions, chord scales, voice leading, cadences, substitution, modal interchange, and chromatic harmony. Major keys and their relative minors are treated as a unified harmonic system, allowing chord relationships and tonal movement to be understood without maintaining two competing sets of Roman numerals. Visual extension trees reveal how chords grow; harmonic maps show how progressions move between neighboring keys; and slash-chord matrices systematically place familiar triads over new bass notes to uncover inversions, suspensions, extended structures, line clichés, and previously hidden harmonic possibilities.

The book also moves beyond conventional functional harmony. Modal "drapes" create motion over a sustained tonal center without relying on traditional cadence. Chord-scale systems distinguish chord tones, context tones, and non-key tones. Negative harmony is explored as a system of reflection capable of transforming chords, progressions, cadences, and melodies. Throughout, voice-leading maps and interval matrices reveal how apparently different musical objects are connected beneath the surface.

Complex ideas emerge from simple principles through diagrams, matrices, listening exercises, construction techniques, and examples drawn from contemporary music. The emphasis is not merely on what musical structures are called, but on how they arise, why they sound the way they do, how many possibilities actually exist, and how those possibilities can become tools for intentional artistic choice.

Written for songwriters, producers, composers, performers, and anyone who works creatively with sound, this book preserves the rigor of music theory while reorganizing it around the way music is actually heard, imagined, and made.

Music is math, meaning, and magic. This book connects all three.
