Two enemy witch covens, the Montparssons and the Landevilles, have been locked in a vicious feud for centuries...and they're running out of magic. If it vanishes completely, the Witch Hunters will find and kill them all. In desperation, Iris Montparsson and August Landeville - the enemy Iris once foolishly fell in love with - are forced into an alliance to face The Ash Trials, a contest that offers sanctuary. But not every coven can win and not everyone will survive the brutal challenges.

As buried feelings rise to the surface and the last dregs of their magic drain away, can Iris and August find a way to work together to save the lives of all they love?
