Special Effects: A Backstage Guide

From the team overseeing the special effects at the UK's most major theatre comes this National Theatre Backstage Guide.

This book looks at the core responsibilities of people working within these roles, how they interact with other departments, the sorts of equipment they'd be using in their work and the range of expertise found, from plumbing to electrics.
It gives insight into the entire process of special effects creation and realisation, from where and how the team do their research to avoiding common pitfalls (clue: there are many) to how to train actors and stage crew to use special effects safely and effectively.
Drawing upon recent National Theatre productions for examples and anecdotes, including The Witches (2023), Ballet Shoes (2024) and Coriolanus (2024), this book brings vividly to life the experience of working with them on a daily basis.
This is a dynamic resource that gives exposure to one of the least seen - but arguably most impactful - departments within a theatre.
