Science-Informed Therapy with Horses

Science-Informed Therapy with Horses brings an extensively researched, science-focused approach to equine-assisted therapy and learning through direct enquiry and applied science. Through an extensive survey of up-to-date peer-reviewed publications, the book discusses the efficacy of equine therapeutic interventions and explores horse-owner responsibilities in relation to ethics, horse welfare, and an appreciation of the horse’s emotional life and unique world view.

In clear language, the book explains why working with horses can be so deeply transformative, drawing together neuroscience, psychology, biology and lived experience in a fresh way. It examines evidence from nature, animal therapy, and psychotherapy to show how contact with horses supports emotional regulation, mental health, and therapeutic effectiveness. In an innovative way, the writing applies knowledge from neurological science pertaining to the hemispheres of the brain, demonstrating how attentional differences directly influence the quality of equine-assisted practices, and hence, of human experience. Suzanne Court leads readers to an understanding of what’s happening beneath the surface for both humans and horses through honest connection.

Whether you’re a practitioner, a trainee, or an equestrian, this book gives a grounded, evidence-based foundation that makes equine-assisted therapy and learning more ethical, effective and meaningful. This book is an essential resource for equestrians and practitioners who wish to view their practices within a scientific context.
