After the heart-pounding conclusion to Forest of Hearts, Elka now rules Mazrovia, but her heart lies in the forest with Kaz. Elka's place on the throne is precarious however there are threats from neighbouring lands and, before Queen Serce fled, she revealed an earth-shattering secret: Elka has a twin sister - who may yet claim the throne. 

Serafina lives in the icy city of Windhelm, deep in the witchlands, beyond the reach of Elka's rule. Here, the city is ruled by the Valtrines, a bloodthirsty witch clan. Part of a group of vigilantes, Serafina is locked in a secret battle against the Valtrines, but when she starts to befriend Aleksy Valtrine, her feelings of hatred for the boy start to change. 

Meanwhile, the former queen, Serce exiled from the palace continues to plot - with tension brewing in Mazrovia, will her machinations bring war between the sisters and tear them apart from their lovers?
