Most parents begin reading to their children around age two, often starting with imaginary characters and stories that promote virtues like sharing and tolerance. As reading skills improve, many children are drawn to more complex and mystical tales, sometimes leaving behind stories grounded in reality.

In my pediatric practice, I’ve become convinced that the content of reading material significantly impacts a child’s development. I’ve observed, especially with my grandchildren, a shift from fantasy to the supernatural, with less focus on relatable characters and environments as they grow older.

With Buto Meets His Famous Grandmother, my aim is to bridge the gap between imaginative early reading and the more sophisticated habits of young adults. This story introduces realistic characters that children can connect with as they transition into more complex fiction. Throughout my years in pediatric practice, I’ve believed – and still do – that the right reading material plays a vital role in a child’s education and development.
