The poverty of the people was culminated in a series of famines which ravaged all parts of India in the second half of the nineteenth century. There were around 20 famine years between 1860-1908. According to one estimate, nearly 29 million people died during famines from 1854-1901.
The South India, particularly Madras Presidency also witnessed similar experience of having a series of famines during the period between 1870-1900. Four major famines were occurred in 1876-78, 1891-92, 1896-97, 1899-1900.
The present study will look into different parameters and paradigms of famines and agrarian conditions in Andhra Pradesh. The present book study and analyse the historical factors for the occurrence of repeated drought and famines in Rayalaseema and to analyse the factors responsible for the failure of monsoons change of climate conditions and distress of farming community. It also analyse the impact of famines on the socio, economic and cultural life of the people of Rayalaseema and to evaluate and assess the overall development and further initiatives for the betterment of Rayalaseema.
The proposed study aims to employ a combination of historical, descriptive and analytical approach. Hope this book will be useful for the readers.
