With this setting switched on, concentration levels of toner are dampened to produce a lighter copy than standard output, and this effect naturally uses less toner, so the cartridge lasts a lot longer.

The processing technology employed to create the printed sheet with this type of printer cartridge is a combination of laser and electrostatic technology. The laser mechanism is utilised with a photoelectric drum assembly and the toner powder to form the printed image. It does this by first applying a set of electrical charges across a cylindrical drum from a set of DC electrical transformers. The laser then neutralises these electrostatic charges in areas where no image exists. What is left is an invisible electrostatically charged area that represents the desired image. These charges than attracts oppositely charged toner particles over from the toner cartridge roller to its surface to create a visible image. At that point, the paper is fed into the printer to meet this drum where than a new set of opposite charges are applied to pull the toner form from the drum down onto the waiting paper. It then moves to a fixing assembly where heat and pressure combine to permanently affix the toner into the fibres of the sheet. It then exits the printer ready for use.
