After Frances Bloom posts her grumpy parents in a large box to the South Sandwich Islands, her schoolteacher, the nasty Ms Thistle, declares that she cannot live alone. Frances promptly responds with an 'untruth' - 'I live with my grandparents'. In order to keep the authorities away, Frances sets out immediately to find some grandparents. Grandma Maude, a large, honey-coloured bear, and Grandpa Harold, a garden gnome, are soon adopted into Frances's life.
