When documentary filmmaker, Ben Lawrence investigates a newspaper article about a local security guard and part-time ghost hunter, Jason King - he begins a seven-year journey into a world of haunted homes and broken souls and discovers a story about a man confronting his innermost demons. Soon after they meet, Jason presents Ben with a stack of hospital records from his childhood. The documents chart a series of incidents from Jason’s youth that he cannot recall. Sensing there is more to the story, Ben offers to help Jason in his decades long search for the only person who may hold the key to Jason’s lost childhood – his father. One day, Jason is contacted by a childhood friend. Sensing a breakthrough, they meet with this newfound collaborator and discover that others are also searching for his father, including the police. As the police investigation intensifies, it leads to an horrific family secret being exposed — forcing Jason to confront a dark past and it’s many victims. Part true-crime, part family mystery, GHOSTHUNTER is an emotional, peculiar and at times darkly humorous journey of catharsis through haunted lives – a real-life ghost story of one man unearthing his past to reclaim his future.
Review of Ghosthunter by Eddie @ The Movie Guys
A labour of love for Australian filmmaker Ben Lawrence, who spent the best part of 7 year’s filming this haunting local documentary, Ghosthunter is the years must see Australian film and one of the best documentaries ever produced on local shores.
Inspired to start a documentary after reading a local newspaper report about security guard and ghosthunter Jason King, Lawrence’s documentary may at first seem like a rather by the numbers affair, that quickly turns into something else entirely as the film turns from exploring King’s fascination with the ghost world, into an investigation of the ghosts of his childhood that have shaped him into the man he is today.
Ghosthunter is the year’s must-see Australian film and one of the best documentaries ever produced in our country. It may be hard to track down but Ghosthunter should be seen by as many people as possible from not only Australia but the world.
