Review of The Black Panther Soundtrack by Thomas Bleach
I’m beginning to question if there is anything Kendrick Lamar can’t do because so far there is nothing on that list. He’s just gone and curated his first film soundtrack and it’s pretty great. Marvel’s new blockbuster Black Panther is one of the most hyped movies of the year and for a good reason. It’s a political movement that needed to happen and this soundtrack takes that message to a whole new level. Musically it’s a continuation from his last album “Damn” and hears him being a little bit more bold and sonically creative. There are moments that are very cinematic like album opener “Black Panther” which you can tell was created around a buzzing storyline. And then you have songs like “All The Stars” feat. SZA which is an absolute banger with it’s euphoric pop infused hook that will have you instantly smiling. His collaboration with The Weeknd “Pray For Me” follows this trend and serves as the perfect album closer. But it’s not all about Kendrick’s raps that makes this album amazing its also his production skills. He curated the remaining tracks and will have you feeling inspired and wanting to dance at the same time. Standout favourites is the slick “Redemption” by Zacari and Babes Wodumo as well as Vince Staples and Yugen Blakrok’s ridiculously catchy “Opps” which will have you voguing and dancing instantly. Jorja Smith stands out as a rising star with her track “I am” which gives you soulful and emotional vibes while Muzzy’s “Seasons” strips things down with a impactful hook. If you didn’t already want to see Black Panther then you will want to after listening to this soundtrack. It’s super fresh, uplifting and captivating and has so many great musical and lyrical ideas that will leave you impressed.
