Motion Graphics is the project of Joe Williams, a New York-based electronic artist who will make his Domino debut with a self-titled album. While Motion Graphics will serve as the project's first official release, Williams has been an active producer for many years, having released an album (entitled Smoke) under the name White Williams in 2007, and more recently, collaborating with Baltimore sound artist Matt Papich on his Co La project, while also serving as a core member of the amorphous Lifted ensemble (headed by Future Times' Maxmillion Dunbar), whose first album arrived last year via PAN. Created over a two-year period, the ten songs which make up Motion Graphics' first album are widescreen digital compositions (occasionally graced by understated vocals) that cover a good deal of sonic ground as they attempt to connect the dots between Williams' disparate influences, which span everything from '80s-era Japanese music and cosmic ECM jazz, to the sounds of modern-day menu systems and the ambient electronic noises that fill our everyday lives. From the beginning of producing Motion Graphics, Williams had set out to make a techno-pop record, of the sort Ryuichi Sakamoto's Yellow Magic Orchestra (a.k.a. YMO) or Kraftwerk had made in their time. However, Williams was not interested in simply harkening back to the sounds of those classic groups, but rather, like those groups, he aimed to make music that would reflect the technological realities of the time and place he lives in. Kraftwerk had the Autobahn and the birth of computing; YMO had Sony Walkmans and the rise of Nintendo; Motion Graphics has Twitter, smart phones, and the ever-expanding presence of drones.
