This concerto is one of the first fruits of Mozart’s emancipation – mental, if not yet physical – from the stifling environment of Salzburg, and his working conditions in the service of that city’s Prince-Archbishop. Mozart had just returned from Paris: a fateful journey during which his mother died; he was exposed to French music and to French indifference, and he fell in love with the unresponsive Aloysia Weber, whose sister he was eventually to marry. Before the journey, Mozart was a gifted adolescent; after it, a man.

In this Concerto, we see for the first time the assurance of style which was to become a hallmark of Mozart’s music. From the majestic opening and the reflective, graceful slow movement to the boisterous finale, this is a superb vehicle for showcasing two fine players.
