Slacker is the significant debut by cult director Richard Linklater (Dazes and Confused, A Scanner Darkly, School of Rock, Fast Food Nation) and was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize - Dramatic at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival. Many independent filmmakers of the period credit it as the film that inspired or opened doors for them, most famously Kevin Smith, whi said it was the inspiration of Clerks. Slackers follows a single day in the life of a collection of mostly 20-something bohemians and eccentic misfits in Austin, Texas.The characters include Linklater as a miscreant who steps off a bus and comes across a hit-and-run, a UFO fanatic who insists the US government has been on the moon since the early 1950s, a JFK conspiracy theorist, an elderly anarchist who befriends a man trying to rob his home, a seriial television collector and a woman trying to sell a Modanna pap smear.
