The Top Disney Physical Releases

With decades of content, Disney has always put out some amazing releases on VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and now 4K Ultra HD (4K UHD). To celebrate Disney’s physical media, I wanted to break down my 10 favourites currently on sale. These are just my personal picks, there are plenty of others that could easily slot in, but these are the ones I want to celebrate and titles that are must-haves for any film collector. So, without further ado, let's get stuck into it!

The X-Files complete collection DVD/Blu-Ray –

I haven’t been able to talk about it on this blog before, but I am a massive X-Files fan. The show ranks among my top 5 of all time, and the two feature films are also among some of my favourites in the sci-fi genre. After the release of the show's eleventh season in 2019, Fox (acquired by Disney) released a stunning 11 season collection that also included the two feature films as well. All the episodes are brought to us in stunning high definition 1080p quality. He upscale from the 1990s episodes all look stunning, with this set remaining the best way to watch the show. Relive all of the chemistry between Fox Mulder and Dr Dana Scully in glorious HD. A must-own set for all X-Files fans!

Pirates of The Caribbean 5 movie set 4K UHD –

Can you believe that it’s been 20 years this year since Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl first sailed into theatres? Time flies… With that said, introducing my second pick in this blog post, is the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean films on 4K UHD in 2021. This 5-disc set showcases the iconic franchise in all its Ultra HD goodness. The franchise has been a staple in my viewing for 20 years. I have owned these films on DVD, Blu-Ray and now 4K UHD. The upgrade whilst meeting some pushback from fans, is the superior viewing experience. The titles look great in 4K!

Captain America Trilogy 4K UHD –

Choosing just one Marvel set is hard, but I had to go with the first avenger, with Captain America. The Captain America films remain my favourite individual series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Guardians of the Galaxy films come awfully close, but I am choosing Captain America because of its influence on me and the connection I had with Steve Rogers arc over the trilogy. He embodies heroism, right down to his core, and there is something charming in that. We have great villains, an amazing conflict in Civil War and of course the bromance to end all bromances between Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier and Captain America himself. The films were also made to be seen in 4K UHD. They look utterly fantastic. Must own for all MCU fans!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit 4K UHD –

Another Disney classic, Who Framed Roger Rabbit made its 4K UHD debut last year, and the film remains one of the best-looking discs to date from the mouse house. It looks stunning, upgrading the original format, with minimal digital smoothing, and effective high dynamic range. As a massive fan of this film, I adored this 4K re-master. The film looks absolutely stunning, with the colours really popping and improved sound. The film remains ground-breaking, with CGI blended family films not even coming close to the heights of this film. Roger Rabbit still looks stunning. He looks like a full realised character, realistically existing in his world. I love the way this film looks, and it may just be my favourite Disney 4K UHD disc…

Alien Movies –

One of the best sci-fi films of all time, is of course Ridley Scott’s terrifying 1979 spacey odyssey, ‘Alien’. I still remember renting this title for the first time at Video Ezy with my Dad, it was a Saturday night and my eyes did not leave the screen. I was glued to the screen. The film is tense, legitimately terrifying and one of the most realistic sci-fi space centric films of all time. Avatar & Avatar: The Way of Water 4K UHD –

There is no denying the cultural impact that Avatar has had on popular culture. Both films currently hold the 1st and 3rd highest grossing films of all time position, making an astonishing $5 billion at the global box office. Both films were released on 4K UHD this June, and they are two absolutely stunning releases. The films look gorgeous on 4K UHD, with enhanced sound, visual smoothing to some of the effects from the 2009 original and of course, beefed up sound! Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water is the ultimate double bill to showcase just what your 4K tv can do!

Pixar Blu-Ray/DVD Collection –

Pixar is one of the best Hollywood film studios of the past 30 years. The studio has some of the most memorable animated film s to date, setting the industry standard for computer-generated animation with their 1994 classic ‘toy Story’ Since then the studio has experienced resounding success with films such as Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2-4, The Incredibles, Up, Inside Out, The Cars Franchise, Brave, Coco and many, many more. This ultimate Pixar set released in 2020, has all of Pixar’s films up until ‘onward’, including the Pixar shorts. This is the ultimate set for Pixar fans, with the set coming in a glorious box set, with artwork of all the key characters from each of the films decorated on the outside of the box. This is an amazing set and a must own for all Pixar fans!

Guardians of The Galaxy: Volume 3 DVD/Blu-Ray/4K UHD –

As mentioned above, it was hard to choose just one Marvel collection for this blog post, however, I am going to cheat slightly, highlighting the last ever Disney release on physical media in Australia ‘Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3’. Guardians 3 is one of the best entries in the MCU, wrapping up one of the best trilogies in recent years. The film is gorgeous visually and has an emotionally poignant story that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Above all else, this is the last film to be released on physical media in Australia, you need this as a memento, to treasure and hold. It represents decades of physical releases, from clamshell VHS cases, to crisp, glorious 4K UHD. Die Hard 4K UHD –

Another great re-release from the mouse-house since their acquisition of Fox in 2019 is the 4K re-release of the 1988 classic ‘Die Hard’ on 4K UHD. Die Hard is a classic film, not just in the action genre, but in cinema. The film’s Blu-Ray release left a little to be desired, with it missing some of the textured elements that the 4K expertly keeps intact. The film is smoothed, but not to the point of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, rather improving the film's look and making this the superior version of the film. This is the perfect way to watch the film and a must own for cinema fans, and owners of a 4K TV!

The Empty Man DVD –

This is an odd choice for this list, but it has the novelty of being the very last 20th Century Fox release before Disney’s acquisition. It was released during the COVID-10 pandemic and bombed horribly at the box office. The film did not receive a physical release internationally, dropping straight to Disney+, however, in March 2021, we were lucky enough in Australia for the film to drop on DVD. As a physical media collector and a massive fan of the film, I was very excited to get this film on DVD. It’s a prized item in my collection and I applaud everyone who hasn’t seen the film to definitely check it out. It's more thriller than horror, but it's expertly crafted and very well-made. If you haven't checked it out, you need to, it's that good!
