The Most Anticipated Films Coming in 2024

2024 is bringing some amazing films to the big screen. We have a wide variety of films this year, including anticipated sequels, original films, spin offs and adaptations. To celebrate the new year, I will be breaking down 10 films you need to look out for in 2024. These are in no particular order, so without further ado, let's get stuck into it!

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga –

Fans have been waiting near 10 years for another entry in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic, Mad max saga, and in May 2024, we finally get a follow-up, with a Furiosa prequel. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, as she battles the wasteland, and makes a name for herself.  Any film set in George Miller’s wonderful realisation of a post-Apocalyptic world always has my interests peaked, especially after Fury Road. Whilst this isn’t a direct continuation of the events of 2015’s Fury Road, the film still promises to have all the action, a tonne of references to previous instalments and Chris Hemsworth taking on the role of the film's big bad, Dementus. Sign me up! Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrives in theatres 23 May 2024.

Dune: Part Two –

After the monumental success of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ in 2021, audiences all around the globe were eagerly awaiting the second instalment, concluding the epic story of Paul Atreides. The sequel is doubling down in its epic scope, with more battles, a larger scope, and an incredible cast. Whilst the first film had the likes of Timothee Chalamat, Rebecca Fergusson, Oscar Isaac, Zendeya, Josh Brolin, Jarvier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgard and Dave Bautista, Part Two is expanding this even further, adding to the already impressive ensemble, with Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Lea Seydoux, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Walken, Charlotte Rampling and Stephen McKinley Henderson. As a massive sci-fi fan, I can’t wait to see this one on the biggest screen available. Dune: Part Two arrives in theatres 14 March 2024.

Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes –

One of the most memorable film trilogies in recent years was the impressive Matt Reeve’s directed, Andy Serkis starring Planet of The Apes trilogy. The franchise boasted amazing visual effects from the team at WETA Digital and in 2024, we are getting a follow-up, taking place in the distant future. Wes Ball, who helmed the Young Adult series ‘The Maze Runner’ is at the helm here, promising the new film will be in the same tone of the recent trilogy. Whilst there is no Andy Serkis providing motion capture here, the WETA Digital team are still involved, which ensures the visuals will be just as impressive. Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Dichen Lachman and William H. Macy star this time. Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes arrives in cinemas 23 May 2024.

The Fall Guy –

In recent years, director David Leitch has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile action director, helming such films as: and uncredited director credit for the first John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train and 2024’s The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, as he is enjoying his well deserved break, Colt is called back into duty, when acting heavyweight Tom Ryder (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson), the star of his ex Jody Moreno’s (played by Emily Blunt) latest  directorial effort, goes missing. The film was shot in Australia as well, with an epic action scene taking place on the iconic Harbour Bridge. With Gosling and Blunt in the leads, this one promises to be great! The Fall Guy arrives in cinemas 3 May 2024.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire –

After the successful reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise in 2021, with Jason Reitman, son of the director of the original films Ivan Reitman, it was only a matter of time until we got a sequel and that’s exactly what we’re getting in 2024 with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to save the world. This time around, director Gil Kenan takes on directorial duties, previously helming City of Ember, Monster House and the 2015 remake of Poltergeist, all films I enjoy. The film sees Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, Annie Potts, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Dan Ackroyd return, with Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani joining the cast. I am excited to check this one out when it arrives in theatres 28 March 2024.

Beetlejuice 2 –

The late sequels to properties of the 1980s has become a popular trend in Hollywood. It's been long rumoured that we would be getting a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 family horror classic, Beetlejuice, and in 2024 that is finally coming to fruition with Beetlejuice 2. We don’t have a plot yet for this one, all we know is Michael Keaton is reprising the iconic demon Beetlejuice, with Cather O’Hara and Winona Ryder returning to their respective roles, and Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Justin Theorux joining them. Beetlejuice 2 finally scares its way into cinemas 5 September 2024.

Joker 2: Folie à Deux –

One of the biggest box office surprises of the past 10 years, was the overwhelming success of the Todd Phillips directed, Joaquin Phoenix starring Joker origin film, ‘Joker’. The film took in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it a rare entrant in the coveted billion-dollar club. It was only a matter of time before we got a sequel and this year we will see Joaquin Phoenix return as the iconic villain in the anticipated sequel. The film is rumoured to be a musical and will also star Academy Award nominee Lady GaGa as Harley Quinn. We don’t know a great deal in terms of plotting just yet, but if it's anything like Phillips first film, we know it will be a fantastic comic book film. Joker 2: Folie à Deux hits cinemas 3 October 2024.

Deadpool 3 –

Next year marks a slim superhero film roster, with only a handful of comic book films releasing, but easily the most anticipated comic book film releasing is Deadpool 3, once again starring Ryan Reynolds as the merc with a mouth. Friend and frequent Instagram collaborator Hugh Jackman is also starring once again as Logan/Wolverine and Shawn Levy (Fall Guy, Night at the Museum Trilogy and This Is Where I Leave You) directing. The film promises to poke fun at the Disney/Fox merger and will of course have plenty of crude gags and fourth wall breaking humour. Deadpool 3 will hit cinemas later in 2024, with an unconfirmed release date.

Gladiator 2 –

In 2024 we are also getting another belated sequel with Ridley Scott helming a follow-up to, what is regarded by many as his best film, ‘Gladiator’, with the aptly titled ‘Gladiator 2’. Not much is known about this sequel other than its cast which sees Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielson, Denzel Washington, Matt Lucas and Paul Mescal starring. The film will follow Lucius (played by Mescal). The son of Maximus’ love Lucilla, after Maximus’ death. He film hasn’t set a release date as of yet, but we can imagine it will arrive right around Oscar season, later this year.

Nosferatu –

One of Hollywood’s best directors at the moment is the wickedly talented Robert Eggers, who has helmed 3 modern masterpieces, The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. His next film ditches the ‘the’ in the title, as he returns to the horror genre with a remake of Nosferatu The film will star Lily Rose Depp, Emma Corrin, Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Willem Defoe and Nicholas Hoult. The film is expected to arrive on boxing day 2024.

I have a few honourable mentions as well, the Radio Silence team (Scream V, Scream VI and Ready or Not) have another horror/comedy with Abigail starring Dan Stevens and Kathryn Newton, arriving 19 April 2024. The Monsterverse continues this year with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, directed again by Adam Wingard and starring Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle and Rachel House. Godzilla x Kong smashes its way into cinemas 14 March 2024. Force of Nature: The Dry 2 also makes its way into theatres in February, with Eric Bana returning as detective Aaron Falk as he investigates another crime. Force of Nature arrives in theatres 8 February 2024. And finally, in 2024 we are getting a sequel to Inside Out, one of Pixar’s best films to date. As Riley enters her teens, she encounters a new emotion Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawk. Inside Out 2 arrives in cinemas 13 June 2024.
