Why you need to own The Goonies (1985) on 4K UHD!

After 100th year celebrations in 2023, Roadshow and Warner Bros are continuing to deliver with another slate of 4K Ultra HD remasters arriving in March and April 2024. We’ve already seen classics such as: The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, Rebel Without a Cause, Cool-hand Luke, Unforgiven, Rio Bravo, V For Vendetta, Beetlejuice, and many, many more hit shelves over the past 2 years. Now we can look forward to another slate of releases, starting with ‘The Goonies’.

After years of waiting, we’ve finally been treated to ‘The Goonies’ on 4K Ultra HD. This 1980s classic has been on my 4K Wishlist for a number of years. I’ve held off picking this one up from international sites, knowing that Roadshow would come through with the goods and this April they have! ‘The Goonies’ remains One of the best and most beloved films from the 1980s. Directed by Richard Donner (Superman, The Omen) and written by Chris Columbus (Home Alone) and Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Raiders of The Lost Ark, E.T, Jurassic Park and many more), the film remains the go-to flick for childlike wonderment and adventure. The films follow a group of young misfits, as the film’s title suggests, called ‘The Goonies’, who discover an ancient map and set out on an epic adventure to find the legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure. The Goonies band together against all odds and show us what it truly means to be a friend. This film has always had a profound effect on me and ever since I first saw it in my youth, it has remained one of my favourite films and it was an absolute blast re-visiting it on 4K Ultra HD!

‘The Goonies’ perfectly captures youth and the wonderment that comes with a sense of adventure. I can guarantee growing up, we all dreamed of going on an adventure like ‘The Goonies’ do here. The characters are all relatable and there wouldn’t be a single person in the world who didn’t possess qualities of Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Mouth, Sloth, Andy, Stef, or Data. The kids’ interactions with one another and the chemistry each of the talented young cast have with one another, is what makes the film as memorable as it is. The cast of course had Sean Astin (Lord of The Rings trilogy, Rudy, Stranger Things), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Avengers; Infinity War and Endgame, Deadpool 2, Outer Range), Corey Feldman (Friday The 13th The Final Chapter, The Lost Boys), Jeff Cohen (Family Ties, Amazing Stories), Kerri Green (Mad About You, Lucas) and Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, Loki). All of these kind actors are just stunning, working amazingly together, feeling like genuine friends, which of course, is the heart and soul of Goonies. Spielberg and Columbus clearly knew what they were doing when writing these characters and dialogue for them, which is a huge reason why it works as well as it does. Donner clearly understood the talent he was working with as well, giving the kids room to breathe on set and letting their natural ability shine through the material.

‘The Goonies’ is a fantastic adventure film, filled with whimsy and wonderment, that is often missed in a lot of modern blockbuster films. It is elevated by its expertly crafted story by Spielberg and Columbus and elevated even further by Richard Donner’s sure-handed direction. Its cast have all gone on to do amazing things, but of course, will all be remembered for their roles in ‘The Goonies’. This is a must-own for film fans, and the film legitimately ranks as one of my favourite films of all time and is a must own for all film collectors on 4K UHD, so be sure to secure your copy today from Sanity, link below!
