Based on the well-known book "The Dry" written by Jane Haper. The film adaptation landed in cinemas on January 1st 2021, and to this day, it is one of my top favourite films that has been released so far.
If you're not familiar with the plot, The Dry introduces Aaron Falk (Eric Bana), a detective living in Melbourne, Australia. He hears word that one of his childhood friends has committed suicide after murdering his family. Aaron returns to his hometown to pay his respects, but he hoped a brief visit back home instead turns into him assisting with the current investigation.
As a plot, The Dry has a beautiful setup, and the character introduction the film presents of Aaron is highly pleasing. We understand that he is sad to hear about the loss of his friend, and he is not too excited to be returning home. Eric Bana delivers an unforgettable performance as Aaron and is easily one of his performances within his acting career.
The Dry is filled with secrets, and everyone around Aaron is a prime murder suspect. While watching the film on the first go, I found nothing was too obvious or predictable from start to finish. Visually, I also loved the look of this film, and the gritty tones are all a perfect match for this story.
The Dry comes highly recommend. It's a great film that introduces several mysteries, and the outcomes are never predictable. The Dry grabs its audience efficiently with a solid setup and takes them on an unforgettable murder mystery. Eric Bana, as the lead, is brilliant, and the character is quite likeable. For an Australian film, this most certainly deserves more attention and if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to pick up a copy on Blu-ray or DVD today.
