The Accountant 2 Movie Review
One of the best action/thrillers of the past ten years was Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck’s 'The Accountant'. The film was a sleeper hit at the box office, bringing in an impressive $155 million at the worldwide box office against a $44 million budget. The film also holds a 53% critical rating and 77% audience rating on Rotten tomatoes and a 7.3 on IMDB, showing that audiences around the globe, loved the film. It was announced shortly after the film success in 2016, that there would be a sequel. However, due to scheduling conflicts with the film's star, it was shelved. Thankfully, after Affleck had dropped out of future DC film projects as Batman, it freed his schedule, allowing O’Connor and Affleck to re-team finally for ‘The Accountant 2’ in 2025.
The ‘Accountant 2’ finally hit cinemas in April 2025, to great acclaim, certified fresh at 76% by critics and 92% by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and bringing in an impressive $103 million worldwide. The film once again stars Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, Jon Bernthal as his brother Braxton and director Gavin O’Connor. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a brilliant accountant and covert operative, is drawn back into action when a cryptic message links him to a murdered government official. Teaming up with his estranged brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal), he uncovers a conspiracy involving a missing family, a deadly assassin with amnesia, and a trafficking ring. As they fight to rescue a young boy and expose the truth, Christian finds redemption and reconciliation. As a massive fan of the original film, I was so excited to finally get a sequel, and it did not disappoint.
The strengths of this film lie in the chemistry shared by its two leads. Affleck and Bernthal are wonderful here. Their scenes in the first film were amongst the best and why the film resonated with so many people. Here, the film doubles-down, giving audiences exactly what they want, with The Accountant 2 essentially playing like and old-fashioned, buddy-cop film from the 1980s and 90s. Their chemistry together is fantastic and a real highlight. You can feel the history between both of them and how they navigate their difficult personalities. There are some moments of humour but also moments of warmth and humanity. It’s really well balanced and for me the strongest part of the entire film.
Gavin O’Connor once again helms the action sequences with care, creating some nail-biting set-pieces, with actual stakes. The opening of the film is brilliant and one of my favourite set-pieces from the year so far. O’Connor has a clear love for the genre, and you can see this in his work. He moves the camera with an energy, that most filmmakers don’t. He understands what makes these sequences work. In a lot of action films in the modern age, we get a lot of shaky cam close-ups, that really take away from these sequences. If you liked the action in the first film, than you are going to love it in ‘The Accountant 2’.
‘The Accountant 2’ builds on the strengths of the first film, giving us a buddy-cop dynamic with Affleck and Bernthal. The action is sparse, but the plot is intriguing and well realised, making the action all the more satisfying when it does happen. The film is focused more on spending time developing out lead characters and giving them moments to shine. It’s worth the watch, especially for fans of the first film.
