James Gunn has made himself known as one of the best filmmakers working today, with his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the writer/director of ‘The Guardians of The Galaxy’ Volumes 1 and 2. But before Gunn made a splash in mainstream, blockbuster territory, he was directing small-scaled horror/comedy films with ‘Slither’ being my pick of the bunch. Although a critical darling, with a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 86%, many have criticsied the film, stating its gore and body horror effects might just be too much for moviegoers to handle.
So I am here to settle the debate will ‘Slither’ gross you out?
In short yes, yes it will, but who will it gross out remains the main question? As a horror film buff, I have seen it all, from blood raining from the sky in 2013’s ‘Evil Dead’ remake, to an exploding head in ‘Scanners’, it takes a lot for me to be grossed out, ‘Slither’ managed to make my skin crawl, whilst also laughing hysterically and there lies the charm of James Gunn’s filmography. Some of the seuqences are downright disgusting, but if you are a fan of 1980s horror, then the film acts as a perfect homage, paying tribute to some of the best horror films of this era including ‘The Blob’, ‘The Fly’ and ‘Friday The 13th’. Gunn also blends the use of practical effects with CGI in a way, that makes the film feel organic and real. This might further gross out moviegoers, but as a horror buff I can truly appreciate the effort and craft of Gunns work here.
If you are light in the stomach and do not enjoy gross-out body horror and gore, then stay far away from ‘Slither’. It is not for the faint at heart. But if you are a horror fan and love seeing gore used efficiently and effectively, then this is a must-watch! Thanks to Umbrella Entertainment, ‘Slither’ is now available as a part of their ‘Beyond Genres’ collection. This is a great release for genre fans and for those wanting to check out this hidden cult classic. Be sure to pick up your copy today on DVD or Blu-Ray from your local Sanity or online. You won’t want to miss it!
