Looney tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up (2025) Movie Review

The Looney Tunes have been around now for more than 95 years. They have endured many different studio mergers, animation styles and even voice actors over their near 100-year run. Buggs Bunny has become synonymous with the studio, acting as Warner Bros. mascot for decades. We’ve seen a handful of feature-films grace the silver screen over the year including ‘Space Jam’, ‘Looney Tunes Back in Action’ (my personal favourite) and ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’. In 2023, after Warner Bros. most recent merger with Discovery (now known as Warner Discovery), it was announced that two Looney Tunes feature films that had been in development, had been shelved and not to be released, a fully 2D animated film ‘Looney tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up and a CGI/live-action hybrid starring John Cena and Will Forte, Coyote vs Acme. This was to the shock and horror of fans, who were really disappointed to find out they might not be able to see these films. Thankfully, Ketchup Entertainment came to the rescue, announcing they would distribute both films in 2025 and 2026 respectively, and Pinnacle Films had taken on the distribution here in Australia. The first of these films, ‘Looney tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up ’, hit cinemas earlier this year to great critical acclaim, holding an impressive 86% critical rating and 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film follows Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they find themselves at the centre of an intergalactic conspiracy when a mysterious UFO crashes into their home. Struggling to save their condemned house, the duo takes jobs at the Goodie Gum factory, only to uncover a sinister alien plot: mind-controlling bubble gum is turning people into zombies. With the help of scientist Petunia Pig, they must stop the alien invader and save the world—if they can survive each other’s antics long enough to do it. This film was an absolute blast, and a joy to see on the big screen.

The real star of this film is the incredible animation. I often talk to my friends about my love and appreciation for hand-drawn, 2D animation. There still something so special about it. It’s not just the nostalgic feel of seeing this style again in a major cinematic release, it’s more so the artistry of the art style. There is a real craftsmanship to the animation that is under-valued in the modern landscape. That is not to de-value modern animation. The photo-realistic style of Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks and Illumination animation, is gorgeous, it’s just refreshing to see these other styles being explored in the cinematic landscape. We get some gorgeous colours, atmospheric textures and amazing lightning in this film, that would not have the same effect if it was in 3D. There is an old-timey quality to the design of the characters, feeling like very early designs of the characters, specifically Daffy and Porky. It really is remarkable to see, and a huge reason why the film works so well for me.

The plot is goofy, over-the-top and very Looney Tunes, which is another strength of the film. The plot is really a loose framework to hang goofy, Looney Tunes slapstick and gags from, which for this type of film, is completely fine. The gags had me in hysterics multiple times throughout the film’s runtime, to the point where I was gasping for air from laughing so hard. In everyday life, I laugh fairly often, but when it comes to films, not so much. But here, I was laughing a lot! The plot itself is quite fun, as a fan of the sci-fi genre, it feels like an homage to 1950s science-fiction films. In that respect, I think the film will play to modern audiences and those who love those types of films. It hits the mark for audiences of all ages!

Populated with hilarious gags and gorgeous animation, ‘Looney tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up’ harkens back to a simpler time for animation in the best possible way. It evokes a level of nostalgia I haven’t felt watching a film on the big screen in quite some time. The humour is rapid fire, and Daffy and Porky have never been better on screen. It was just such a joy to watch, with the smile not leaving my face for its entirety. I can’t recommend you see this one enough on the big screen. What a joy!
