3 Reasons Why You Need To Buy Uncharted

Video games over the years have become the giant of home media. The success of the industry has been massive over the past few years and thanks to AAA titles such as 'Uncharted', we are seeing these games become staples in popular culture. A common thread in Hollywood is to adapt these games for the big and small screen and the latest film to receive this treatment is Sony's 2022 adaptation 'Uncharted' with Tom Holland bringing the titular hero Nathan Drake to the big screen. Naughty Dog's game series has seen 4 entries featuring Nathan Drake with, 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune', 'Uncharted 2: Among Thieves', 'Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception' and 'Uncharted 4: A Thief's End'. This film largely borrows elements of all of these films, creating an entirely new narrative, with action set pieces taken from all four games. I was a little nervous heading into this one, as so many video game adaptations miss the mark, but I am pleased to say that 2022's 'Uncharted' was a lot of fun. Today I am here to tell you 3 reasons why you need to check out 'Uncharted'. So, without further ado, let's get to it!

The cast - One of the biggest criticisms of any adaptation is usually in relation to casting. I am pleased to say that 'Uncharted' benefits from a stellar cast. Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake, early into his career as a thief, is brilliant. He brings to life the character and a childlike sensibility that plays well, as the audience along with Holland's drake are introduced to this world. Mark Wahlberg is also great as Sully, a guide of sorts to Nathan Drake. He provides guidance to Nathan Drake, but you're not sure what side he's on for a lot of the runtime, which provides a few moments of levity. I enjoyed the interplay between the two, I found it to be quite fun. Overall, the casting here was on point, feeling like these great characters had jumped right from the games onto the silver screen.

The action set-pieces - One of the hallmarks to the Uncharted franchise are the action sequences. They are always riveting and chocked full of life. Director Ruben Fleisher does a great job at bringing these action set pieces to life in the film. We have a number of great sequences plucked straight from the games, including the cargo plane sequence from Drake's deception, which opens the film. It's fun, exciting and puts the audience in amongst the action. Some of the sequences including the finale of the film are over-the-top, but they're always fun and full of energy. I absolutely adore the way these sequences play out, they're just so much fun and definitely a high point in the film.

The Easter Eggs - In recent years, a hallmark for these big-budget action films based on pre-existing intellectual properties, is their incorporation of hidden easter eggs and refenereces for the hard core fans of the material. 'Uncharted' does this very well, with little hidden references that I won't spoil here. But if you are a keen fan of the games, then there is plenty to love here with items, action sequences, certain characters and even an actor cameo that will keep fans of the Uncharted games happy, and may entice those unfamiliar with the games to check them out. I think the film does a great job of hiding these references among the main story, so it doesn't exclude casual moviegoers and rather appeases both casual moviegoers and fans simultaneously.

Overall, this is such a fun flick. Uncharted possesses all the elements you want it to, breathtaking action sequences, great character and a great cast to boot and plenty of laughs to be had along the way.
