Hana Omniverse ?

The prelude to Hana Music, an author's music community

Among the albums released in the 1990s, creative albums by underground singers The Hana Music label logo was attached without fail. Hana Music was founded in 1992 by brothers Jo Dong-jin and Jo Dong-ik. One day in the 1980s, Jo Dong-jin, who attended a gathering of musicians, was so reticent that he only said "give me food" three times a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thanks to his taciturn and slow, mystical scope of activity, people who follow him like a 'teacher' have arisen. Established singers, music aspirants, and university students admired Cho Dong-jin's musical attitude, which communicated with the public through songs with a persuasive and sincere voice in silence rather than loud words. From then on, Dongjin Jo began to be called the godfather of underground singers.

Hana Music was close to the cradle of creators who maintained the 'authorism' spirit of underground musicians in the 1980s, which was indigenous to Dong-A Entertainment, founded by CEO Young Kim. Dong-Jin Cho, his younger brother Dong-Ik Cho, and several creators from Dong-A Entertainment, who solidified their presence and position in the underground scene through Dong-A Planning, played a role in the birth of Hana Music. The 'Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest', which started in 1989, also provided fertile factors for the birth of a new label. Cho Dong-jin participated as a judge in the new singer-songwriter contest, and Cho Dong-ik, who produced the commemorative album of the competition, commissioned Jo Dong-ik and his colleagues to arrange the finalists' songs to be included in the album. The winners of the competition, such as Kyu-Chan Cho, Chan-Yong Ko, Hye-Sun Jung, and In-Young Park, who were born through this process, joined Hana Music, laying the groundwork for the Hana Music label.

According to a media interview with Hana Music, the cradle of folk and fusion pop in the 1990s,

Dongjin Cho said, “The birth of Hana Music was directly helped by SKC’s financial investment under Sunkyong Group (currently SK Group).” SKC actively proposed to Cho Dong-jin and Jo Won-ik to establish a production company that would create its own software. The start went smoothly because the brothers Jo Dong-jin and Dong-ik Cho wanted to produce albums that fit their musical orientation and inclination in the production they founded as the main axis. Hana Music's first album was the first regular album released in 1992 by Jeong Hye-seon, who won the silver prize at the 1st Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest. Most of Hana Music's albums were released with the logo of King Records.

Since then, Moo-Ha Lee 1st album CD version (1992), Mixed group Strangers 1st album (1993) led by Koh Chan-Yong, Jung Won-Young 1st album “The Days Gone” (1993), Lee Byung-Woo’s guitar performance 1-2 album CD, Cassette version (1993) , Lee Byeong-woo's 3rd album, Han Dong-joon's 2nd album, Jo Dong-ik's ?Donggyeong? (1994), Kwon Hyuk-jin's 1st album (1994), and Jang Pil-soon's 5th album (1997) were released through Hana Music. In addition, the first toy album formed by Yoo Hee-yeol, the grand prize winner of the 4th Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest, and Yoon Jung-oh was also released through this label. Interestingly, Cho Dong-ik and his session band team at the time (Chun-Ho Ham on guitar, Young-Bae Yoon on guitar, Yong-Jun Park on keyboard, Young-Seok Kim on drums, etc.) went beyond the borders of Hana Music and included artists who were in the category of folk and pop/rock at the time (Gwang-Seok Kim, Zoo, Chi-Hwan Ahn, Travel Sketch). etc.) played an important role in the first half of the
1990s.

Special album commemorating the birth of Hana Music

In the early days of any music label, it is natural for them to be active in promoting their musicians to the public. The first album of Hana Omnibus, which was re-released after 31 years, was no different. The Hana Omnibus Compilation Series album, which has been followed by a trilogy up to the third album, was produced with the clear purpose of celebrating the birth of Hana Music's label and at the same time informing the public of the creative music of its artists. This album, the starting point of the series, was planned and produced by Hana Music, and simultaneously released by King Records as a set of three LPs, cassette tapes and CDs on September 1, 1992. In this album, new and old musicians, such as Dong-jin Cho and Dong-Ik Cho, the spiritual supporters of the label, Pil-soon Jang and Byeong-woo Lee, Jin-tae Son and Deok-kyu Ha, who have been in a relationship since the days of Dong-A Entertainment, as well as new artists who joined the Hana Music label at the time, such as Young-ro
Yoon and Hyuk-jin Kwon, are included in this album. participated harmoniously. There are only 3 new songs in the 1st omnibus album, an

album centered on already-released songs .

More than half of the songs on the album are based on ready-made songs that have already been released before. However, all songs went through a new mixing process. A new song, Son Jin-tae's original song , was released through this album. Pilsoon Jang's was not found on the regular album, and was included again in her best album in 1993, the following year after it was first released through this album. , sung by Hana Music's newcomer Kwon Hyuk-jin, who later formed the male duo Uncle with Han Dong-joon, was also released for the first time through this album before being re-recorded on his first solo album (1993).

Jo Dong-jin's was first released in ?Cho Dong-jin 4th Album?(1990). Cho Dong-jin, who started his career as a guitarist for the rock band Shagreen in the 1960s, showed talent in composing and released his original songs through folk singers in the 70s, making his name known as a composer, but he did not actively engage in activities. Having developed into Hana Music's spiritual supporter, he made his name widely known to the public for the first time by making a hit in his first full-length album (1979), which is regarded as a milestone separating the 70's and 80's. After the release of the 2nd album (1980), he released the 3rd album (1985) through Orient Production's Koo Ja-young in connection with Dong-A Planning President Kim Young.

Jo Dong-Ik's is already a song from his 2nd album (1988). Cho Dong-jin's younger brother, Jo Dong-ik, met with guitarist Lee Byung-woo and formed the male duo Some Day. Choi Seong-won of Deulgukhwa, who heard the song of a certain day through Jo Dong-jin, recorded of a certain day in the omnibus album [Our Song Exhibition 1] (1984), which he was planning at Dong-A Planning. Some days after that, they disbanded after releasing two full-length albums that are considered masterpieces in Korean popular music history. Yoo Hee-yeol was an avid fan who admired everything about the male duo on a certain day, to the point of revealing on the radio, "I practiced for a long time to even resemble Jo Dong-ik's handwriting." , which is included in this album, contains the lyricism of a lonely and empty city and makes the listener's heart feel cold.

Cho Kyu-chan's is his debut song that won the gold prize at the 1st Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest. Cho Gyu-chan was the fourth of three sons and two daughters of violinist Na Hwarang and singer Yoo Seong-hee, and showed talent for art from an early age. As an art student at Dongguk University, he recognized his musical talent and, at the recommendation of his second brother, Jo Gyu-man, participated in the competition and won the gold medal. gained great popularity mainly on radio. Afterwards, Cho Gyu-chan started his solo career in 1993 after a duet song with Park Sun-joo, group activities, and grew into an important singer-songwriter.

Kim Gwang-seok's was first released through his first solo album released in 1991, a year earlier than this album. Ha Deok-gyu's Thorn Tree is an original song that was first released in 1988 through Donga Planning's 3rd volume, The Poet and Village Chief, and caused a great sensation. In 2000, it was featured on Jo Sung-mo's remake album and became very popular, and many juniors such as Kwak Jin-eon, Glass Box, Lee Eun-mi, Lee Jeong-bong, and Jaurim remade it. Ha Deok-gyu completely changed his musical direction to Christian music (CCM) after the release of his famous song with a deep resonance.

Lee Byung-woo's performance song is an original song first released in 1990 through Hana Music's second album of performances. In the late 1980s, Lee Byung-woo went to Austria to study and became one of Korea's leading guitarists. In a 1994 article for the Hankyoreh, critic Kang Heon recommended records by Cho Yong-pil and others as 10 albums to listen to on the way home for Chuseok. He praised it enough to make me forget. Yun Yeong-ro's , composed by Jo Dong-ik, was the title song of his first solo album released in 1990.

The beginning of a planned series of albums commemorating the birth and departure of the label This

album is the beginning of a planned series of works that comprehensively presents the label's musical identity while commemorating the birth and departure of the music community called Hana Music. In that respect, the Hana Omnibus series albums that led to the trilogy can be said to be a good resource for understanding Hana Music and folk and fusion popular songs in the 1990s. This album, which was released on September 1, 1992, when Hana Music was born, was re-released as ?Hana Omniverse 1, 2, 3 Best? by selecting songs from the album in 1998 after the production of the trilogy was completed. The albums in the Hana Omnibus series are very meaningful in that they contain the representative songs of the musicians of 'Hana Music', a Korean underground auteurist music group in the 1990s. This album is a very valuable record in that it is the first step of that meaningful project. /Choi Kyu-seong, representative of the Korean Popular Song Research Institute. Hana Omnibus ?

The purpose of promoting the label's musical identity and representative songs Donga

Planning and Hana Music can be cited as two labels that represented the 'underground' music scene in the 1980s and 1990s in the history of Korean pop music. Unlike large record labels that focused on promotion and broadcasting activities of large record labels, both labels were centered around singer-songwriters who wrote and composed their own music and communicated with the public through performances in small theaters. Donga Planning brought the existence of its musicians into the public's radar through record stores, downtown music cafes, and radio media. Hana Music, which followed, can be said to be a label that inherited and developed the spirit of 'authorism' of underground musicians into the 1990s.

The Hana Omnibus series was a compilation album designed to introduce artists belonging to the Hana Music label. [Hana Omnibus II] was released on October 1, 1992 due to the musical and commercial success of the previous work. In terms of the artists who participated in this album, it contains a broader intention to summarize the past and present of Korean underground music genealogy at the time. Starting with master Kim Min-ki, who influenced both folk, underground music, and folk song scenes, Kim Hyun-cheol, who grew up through Dong-A Planning, and the duo associated with the two labels, 16 years apart, are in the influence of the 80s. Also, talented artists from the 1990s who were recognized for their musicality in the Korean mainstream and underground at the time, such as Kim Chang-gi, Han Dong-jun, Ko Chan-yong, Jung Won-young, and Park In-young, who can be called the first generation of Hana Music label, are also participating. A3. Hyuncheol Kim - Sleet

Kim Hyun-cheol, who debuted with praise as a 'genius of terms' produced by Dong-A Planning, is a musician who has been steadily loved for his excellent composition ability and sophisticated fusion pop sound. Some may wonder what kind of relationship he has with Hana Music, but the person he met before Dong-A Planning CEO Kim Young was Jo Dong-ik. On the day he passed the college entrance exam, I met Jo Dong-Ik again on the subway after the performance. Jo Dong-ik invited Kim Hyeon-cheol to his house, and the two first met. Cho Dong-Ik, who was surprised by his composing skills, introduced him and became a singer under Dong-A Planning. In his first album (1989), received a great response, but after a two-year hiatus due to a car accident, he worked on this song after the release of his second album [32? Summer] (1992) through Dong-A Planning It was a cover of a song additionally included in Jo Dong-jin's re-recorded [Jo Dong-jin 2]. Originally calm and lyrical folk music, he transformed it
into his own fusion jazz pop.

A4. Chanyong Go - Street Scene

Ko Chan-yong, a representative musician of the first generation of Hana Music, made his debut in 1990 by winning the grand prize at the 2nd Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest with . Through the competition, he met brothers Jo Dong-jin and Jo Dong-ik, and became a member of Hana Music. In 1991, he formed the jazz vocal group 'Strangers' with members of the singing club 'Folk Line' at Incheon National University. Singer Lee So-ra also belonged to this group. Until this album was released, Strangers was all of the officially announced sound sources of , which was included in [Our Song Exhibition 4] (1991), but they already prepared enough self-composed songs to sing their own songs at Hana Music's label performances. had been is an attractive track with a jazz-pop arrangement that is based on Koh Chan-yong's main specialty, acoustic guitar fingering.

A5. Jung Won-young - Standing on the Street

Currently, Jung Won-young is Korea's representative jazz pianist, composer, and professor of practical music. Debuting as a member of the band Rest in 1980, he later worked as a keyboardist in Stone Age, Love and Peace, and The Great Birth. He went to study in the United States in 1984 and is considered one of the first generation of Korean students studying abroad at the Berklee College of Music, along with Han Sang-won and Kim Gwang-min. It was Hana Music where he returned to Korea and released his first solo work in 1993. Prior to the release of his first album, [The Days Gone] (released in June 1993), he, who has mainly used sounds based on fusion jazz, debuted through this album.

B1. Ahn Seong-soo - A picture with autumn

Among musicians from Hana Music, Ahn Seong-soo is an unknown musician that is not well known even to maniacs. He won the grand prize at the 3rd Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest in 1991 with the song from this album. Although it is a folk-oriented song led by lyrical acoustic guitar playing, through the arrangement of Jo Dong-ik and musicians of Hana Music, it exudes the charm of listening to lyrical tracks on a certain day. Ahn Seong-soo made a slight hit with through the 1st album [??] (1997/1998) of rest, a folk-pop duet formed with singer-songwriter Lime in 1997.

B2. 16 Years Gap - From Moment to Eternity

The male duo 16 Years Gap was formed in 1990 by the older brother Kim Ha Yong-deok and the younger Kim Yong-soo who liked music even though they have a 16-year age difference, just like the name of the group. This team received a good response from music enthusiasts by making hits such as and in their 1st album (1990), produced by folk musician Yang Byeong-jip and music-directed by Deulgukhwa Choi Seong-won. got it Afterwards, this song was included in the album, following the song from [Our Song Exhibition 4] (1991). If the first album was closer to the traditional folk genre, this song is a folk pop song with an arrangement based on the use of a slightly ambient synthesizer that Jo Dong-ik was interested in at the time. They took a long hiatus after releasing their second album (1994), but resumed their activities in the late 2010s.

B3. Park In-young - A new world

Female keyboard player and singer-songwriter Park In-young won the gold prize at the 2nd Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest with the song from this album. She was unable to release her full-length album during her time with Hana Music. Each of his 3 omnibus albums contains his own songs. In addition to this album, from [Our Song Exhibition 4] (1991) and from [Hana Music Project 1: Winter Song] (1997) are all. It's hard to find any special technique in vocals, but this song shines with the ability to compose sophisticated Western adult pop melodies. Since then, she has shone more as a songwriter and film OST composer instead of her singer career. Having participated in albums by Lee Seung-hwan, Toy, Noeul, and Lee Soo-young, she composed [Poongsangae] (2011), [Pieta] (2012), [Special Citizen] (2017), and [Changgu] (2018). In 2020, she participated in SM's project with the Seoul Philharmonic to cover orchestral versions of Red Velvet's and Jonghyun's .

B4. Minki Kim - Bongwoori

Kim Min-gi suffered severe hardships as a composer of Yang Hee-eun's , which represented the value of resistance of the era under the Yushin regime in the 1970s. After entering Seoul National University's College of Fine Arts, he started promoting as a folk duo with his alumni Kim Young-se and Dobby Doo. After graduating from college, he gave songs under a pseudonym to Yang Hee-eun, whom he met at YWCA, and continued his music activities in the true 'underground', such as planning and producing a song play [Factory Light] that was distributed as an illegal tape. In 1991, he opened a small theater in Hakjeon, adapted and directed the German rock musical 'Subway Line 1' in Korean, and performed it. ,3,4] The compilation was released in February 1993. is included in the 4th album, and it was released first through this album. We first met in 1985 with Yang Hee-eun's voice and the title . Unlike Yang Hee-eun's version, which is affectionate and powerful, the original author, Kim Min-gi, conveys
the message in a calm middle-aged voice contemplating life. /Kim Seong-hwan (Music Journalist? Executive Editor of Music Magazine [Locomotion])

Hana Omnibus ?

Complete Series Introducing Hana Music Label's Artists

The first and second albums of the Hana Omnibus compilation album series were released about a month apart. On the other hand, the third album, the final version, was produced only in June 1993, eight months after the release of the second album. Like the previous works, the 3rd album has the same nature as a compilation album for the purpose of introducing artists belonging to the Hana Music label. In this album, representative songs of artists who did not get a chance in the 1st and 2nd albums, even though they are musicians who occupy an important position in the history of Hana Music, or pre-release songs of musicians preparing for regular works were selected. In addition, the 3rd album, which included one song each in the 1st and 2nd albums, included new recordings or new songs of past hits. Let's learn about the corresponding artists along with descriptions of each track.

A1. Toy - in my heart

Now, I remember Toy as Yoo Hee-yeol's one-man project, but at the time of their debut, it was a two-member group formed by Yoo Hee-yeol and Yoon Jung-oh, who worked as an engineer at Seoul Music and Hana Music. Yoo Hee-yeol, who was a guitarist for the school band Blue Sails during his high school days, drew attention from Cho Dong-ik by providing keyboardist Kim Jang-hoon's 1st album with , which he made while in high school. Yoo Hee-yeol, who won the grand prize at the 4th Yoo Jae-ha Music Contest in 1992 with , became a member of Hana Music. Completed in the process of working on his first album by casting guest vocalists, as 015B did at the time, this song became his debut song. However, it was first released through this album, which was released a year earlier than the first full-length album in October 1994. With Yoo Hee-yeol's rap and Jo Gyu-chan's sweet vocals, this song was steadily introduced on the radio at the time. After the hit of the song, Yoo Hee-yeol enjoyed an era with
various works that combined the sensibility of classical and popular songs through toys.

A2. Park Joo-yeon - In your car

Park Joo-yeon first came to public attention in the mid-1980s when she worked with composer Ha Kwang-hun to propel Byun Jin-seop to stardom. The lyrics of Byun Jin-seop's 2nd hit songs, such as , , and , were written by her. From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, Park Joo-yeon, who enjoyed a reputation as a lyricist for numerous hit songs, showed her presence as a singer until the mid-1990s. , released through [Our Song Exhibition ?] (1984), became a subtle hit through radio requests, and the first regular album released in 1987 and the second album released four years later [Still You... .?] (1991), and the third album [Music Is You] (1994), which made the up-tempo pop rock track a hit. This song was given to Jeong Won-yeong, a member of Hana Music at the time, and is not included in her regular album.

A3. Park Yong Joon - Your Scent

Keyboard player and singer-songwriter Park Yong-joon played a pivotal role in Hana Music's sessions even before The Classic. He opened his eyes to music while learning the guitar as a child, but he started playing the keyboard more when a cafe suggested that he would be paid more if he played the piano. At the suggestion of composer and singer Ji Geun-shik at the time, he entered the path of his professional musician by joining the vocal group 'Song-Grim'. He participated as a session for Han Dong-jun's 1st album, and while doing sessions for Lee Seung-hwan's live band, he fell deeply into the music world. He created The Classic as a result of his meeting with Kim Kwang-jin, a member of SM Planning. In this process, Park Yong-joon, who was naturally connected to Jo Dong-ik, who was also involved in Han Dong-joon's music, participated in performance sessions and record sessions by Hana Music artists. This song, re-recorded and included in The Classic's first album (1994) a year later, is a
fusion pop ballad track with a relaxed atmosphere. The solo version on this album is better for feeling the charm of his soft and delicate vocals than the classical version.

A4. Jiye Son - Going Out

Son Ji-ye was selected as a singer in 1987 through the music cafe Cherbourg run by DJ Lee Jong-hwan. She made her record debut with in the omnibus album [Omnibus] by new singers released that year. She later released her first solo album (1988) through Oasis Records, which became a radio hit with her self-composed song . It was through her second album [Black Day] (1991) that she came into contact with her Hana music family. Chunho Ham (guitar), Dongik Cho (bass), and Jintae Son (guitar) were deeply involved in the album as session, composer, and arranger. Due to her relationship at that time, she was invited to this album and included Son Jin-tae's song . Sohn Ji-ye's voice, which has her unique and unique singing style, is sometimes bluesy and sometimes fresh and jazzy. A refined Latin-jazz-pop track, it showcases the best of both worlds. Since then, she has composed several CM songs and the OST of the movie 'Access' and the OST of the movie 'Jjang'.sang.

A5. Seongwon Choi - The Key to Happiness

Seongwon Choi is a key member of Deulgukhwa, a folk rock band that represents the underground scene in the 1980s. He is a musician who has been loved by the public for his music containing boyish lyricism based on Western folk and pop writing techniques, at the opposite point of Jeon In-kwon's music, which contains strong and desperate blues and rock sensibility within the group. His greatest hit song, 'The Blue Night of Jeju Island' (1988), can be said to best reflect that characteristic. This song was included as the last track of his 2nd album [Choi Seong-won 2] (1990) released by Dong-A Planning. Having already formed a solid musical bond with Jo Dong-jin and Jo Dong-ik from the days of Dong-A Planning, he re-recorded this song in this omnibus album planned by Hana Music. Like the original version, it seems to lead the song only by playing the acoustic guitar, but in the version in this album, the religious message contained in it becomes clearer in his vocals that are heard more
clearly.

B1. Jang Pilsoon - Before I knew it

Jang Pil-soon's original is a version produced by lyricist and composer Kim Hyeon-cheol, included in his debut album released by Dong-A Planning in 1989. There are a total of four versions of this song so far, only the studio-recorded version. The original and the second version included in this album, and the version in the November 1993 best album [Jang Pil-soon Best Collection], the version in the 2020 remake album [soony re:work-1] There is a fourth version that has been transformed into an electronic track. The version of this album maintains the basic line of bossa nova pop, but presents a cleaner and neater feeling with an authentic Latin jazz arrangement.

B2. Park Hak-gi - Fragrant Memories

Park Hak-gi is remembered as a musician who spent his heyday at Dong-A Planning. In fact, he debuted with in [The 3rd Album of Our Song Exhibition] (1988) released by Dong-A Planning, and released 3 albums from the 1st regular album (1989) containing the original version of this song by Dong-A Planning. did. However, as mentioned in the commentary on [Hana Omniverse II], Dong-Ik Cho is a person who has done sessions for both Dong-A Planning and Hana Music's albums. He naturally maintained a very deep friendship with his Hana music family. Popularly, this song, which became Park Hak-ki's first hit song, was the work of Jo Dong-ik. With a slightly changed intro and a more mature tone than the first album, this version gives a richer feeling than the original version.

B3. Chanyong Go - Shall We Paint?

(Refer to the commentary on [Hana Omniverse II] for the profile of Ko Chan-yong.) This song was included in this album as a solo version of Ko Chan-yong, but it was re-released as a group version in the group Stranger's 1st regular album, released a few months later in November 1993. has been included The version of the group album shows the composition of an arrangement of an authentic standard jazz ballad, and the charm of female vocals full of deep resonance is impressive. Ko Chan-yong's so-called 'male version', which is articulated with a delicate and fine folk-pop sensibility on top of the arpeggio melody of a single guitar, gives a different resonance from the female version.

B4. Muha Lee - Sky Well

Mooha Lee is a musician with the most unique career among musicians who have released records at Hana Music, and one of the least known to the public. To be precise, he is a singer-songwriter who belongs to the category of 'CCM singer'. The relationship with Professor Cheol-Woong Lee, whom he met at the Department of Music at Kyungpook National University, where he entered as a refuge, led to a meeting with musicians such as Jeon In-kwon through the introduction of his junior, and he started music activities in the Daegu area. After wandering around as a young man, he decided to leave home and went to Seoul to meet his music friends and became a Protestant believer. At Ha Deok-kyu's recommendation, he released his first album [Hometown] (1991), which encompasses the nature of popular music and CCM. Since all of his regular works released since then are religiously inclined, it is no exaggeration to say that is his last work as a popular singer. His vocals, which have a thick and heavy
resonance on top of the neat composition of a Western-style adult pop/rock ballad, are really attractive.

B5. Lee Byeong-woo - Congratulatory Marriage

Having formed the group Someday with Jo Dong-ik, he has continued his career as a solo guitar player and film music composer from the 80s and 90s to the present. is a guitar piece by Lee Byung-woo, who has been praised musically. This song was included in his 3rd solo album [Thoughts Without Thoughts], released by Hana Music two months prior to this album. Contrary to the atmosphere of the title, the melody with a sad melody unfolding at the beginning is impressive. The interesting composition that brightens again as it moves to the central theme part beautifully finishes the mood of the song. It is a wonderful song that briefly but strongly expresses the splendid yet lyrical world of music with his flamboyant hand movements as he plays a classical guitar.

At the time of release, the album was released in LP, cassette, and CD, but it was not easy to obtain the [Hana Omnibus] series in any format. In particular, it was very difficult to obtain an LP. This meaningful Hana Omnibus compilation series has been re-released, and it is very welcome from the point of view of maniacs who love music in the genealogy of Hana Music. Through these albums, we hope to have an opportunity to see how deep and hardened the soil of popular music in Korea has become through the 1980s and 1990s. /Kim Seong-hwan (Music Journalist ?
