When Henryk Szeryng died in the spring of 1988 at the age of 69, the world lost one of the great aristocrats of the violin. A patrician in his bearing, rather like Heifetz, his gestures restricted to what is necessary, Szeryng's fidelity to the score can be heard in his recordings for Philips (the label with which he was most closely associated) and for Mercury and Deutsche Grammophon.
At the same time, as decried by Rubinstein, who had been so influential in encouraging him to establish an international career, "Real music lovers want emotion – great moments – which Szeryng's playing gives them."
Now, DG presents Henryk Szeryng's complete Philips, Mercury & Deutsche Grammophon Recordings in this beautiful limited original jacket collection.
"The complete Beethoven piano trios with Henryk Szeryng and Kempff are uniformly superb, the balance between players, patient tempos and sense of musical interplay, all make for readings that illuminate every aspect of this wonderful music..." - Gramophone
"...a combination of brave confrontation and heart-stopping poignancy guaranteed to focus the Concerto's vulnerable spirit" - Gramophone on the 1964 Mercury recording of Schumann's Violin Concerto with Antal Dorati and the LSO
