Nigel Havers stars in this evocative 13-part drama series based on two of the three books in R F Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By trilogy. A magnificent saga set in rural Edwardian England unfolds from the early 1900s through to the end of the Great War. Invalided out of the army during the Boer War, young officer Paul Craddock (Nigel Havers) returns home to become squire of the long neglected Shallowford Estate in Devon. He sets about rebuilding the estate and his life, however neither task is without its challenges. Craddock must use all of his guile and charm if he is to convince the local inhabitants that he is up to the job. A strong bond develops between Craddock and John Rudd (Glyn Houston), the Estate Manager, and it is not long before the Squire is inviting all of the local villagers to a supper party at Shallowford in honour of the King's Coronation. After a disastrous marriage to flighty Grace Lovell (Fiona Gaunt) Paul eventually marries Claire Derwent (Prunella Ransome). Making a content couple they face the challenges that beset the valley together. But their happiness is overshadowed by the Great War, which sees the valley lose many of its inhabitants and Paul back in service.
