In 1940 the entire population of Friar, New Hampshire, 572 people, entered a mountain pass together and were never heard from again. Their dogs were tied to posts and left behind to starve. They left without money, tools and even their clothes. A search party, dispatched by the army long after this community mysteriously disappeared, found the remains of some 300, many who had frozen to death. But others had been victims of a slaughter. Half a century later the township has been repopulated but the legend lives on. Was it a government cover up? Or was it a pagan ritual gone horribly wrong? Accompanied by volunteer researchers, an author investigating the legend retraces the steps of the fatal journey. Is he willing to risk it all in order to discover the truth?
