Why you should buy Scream 6 (2023) on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K UHD

The Scream franchise is one of the most consistent in Horror movie history. Each instalment expands what the previous has done, poking fun at genre tropes in a very meta way, whilst also managing to strike the perfect balance between horror and comedy. The iconography of Ghost Face is, well, iconic. The Ghostface mask is one of the most recognisable in all of horror. The franchise received an injection of new blood with the fifth entry in 2022. The film saw the radio silence team, made-up of directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella, behind 2019s surprise hit ‘Ready or Not’, take the reins of the franchise with original series creator Wes Craven sadly passing away in 2015. The film was a monumental success, with an impressive $138 million at the worldwide box office and an impressive 76% critic score on Rotten tomatoes, proving the franchise still has a lot of life left in it. A sequel was quickly put into production with it announced that it would be released just 14 months later in March 2023. The film eclipsed the success of ‘Scream’ in 2022, with ‘Scream VI’ grossing an impressive $168 million at the worldwide box office, and equalling ‘Scream’ (2022) Rotten Tomatoes critical score of 76%.

The franchise is back and in a very big way! Scream VI follows our core four, as they refer to themselves in this new entry, as they leave Woodsborough behind and head to the big apple, New York City. But their troubles follow them as a new Ghostface has emerged, causing havoc in the streets of New York. With a fun premise and that formula that works oh so well, Scream VI was bound to be a hit. To celebrate the film's release on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD (4K UHD) this month, I will be breaking down why you need to buy Scream VI. So, without further ado, let’s go!

“There are certain rules to this franchise” – the story and formula –

The Scream franchise has always pushed the boundaries when it comes to its tried and tested formula. In 1996, the original film re-invented horror and showed that we could in fact blend the two genres and poke fun at how silly some of these films had become, and now 26 years later, it still works. The horror genre is one of Hollywood’s most profitable. It is a steady money-maker for Hollywood studios. Scream VI provides thoughtful commentary on the state of the genre, pointing out its tropes and flaws, whilst still crafting an intense, scary and at times, hilarious narrative, so the story stands on its own without the meta-aspect. There are certain hallmarks that the franchise manages to maintain throughout each film. The obligatory scene where our characters discuss the tropes, whilst trying to figure out exactly what type of film they’re in. The Ghostface reveal, where our killer or killers explain their motives and how they managed to pull it off and of course the kills. Scream VI does all of these masterfully, with it ranking among one of my favourite sequels in the franchise. The motives are deeply connected to our characters and the whereabouts of Ghostface, and the internal logic of the film all play out perfectly and make sense. It’s a testament to the direction from the radio Silence team, but also the staying power of the franchise due to its fun mechanics.

“Core Four” – The characters of Scream VI –

Scream VI benefits from its cast of characters. We have Scream franchise veteran Gale Weathers, once again played by Courtney Cox return along with Scream IV fan favourite Kirby played by Hayden Panettiere also return, which was a lot of fun. But the strength lies with our four friends, sisters Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barerra) and Tara Carpenter (played by fan favourite Jenna Ortega) and brother and sister duo and niece and nephew of Randy Meeks, Mindy Meeks-Martin (played by Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (played by Mason Gooding). These four characters are so wonderful together. They each have remarkable chemistry with one another. Their interplay is just so much fun and adds to the overall enjoyment of the last two entries. They all have their own unique relationship with one another, and you can really feel the history they share with one another. A strength that the original cast had as well. Sadly, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott sat this instalment out, but hopefully we see a return in Scream VII.

“This isn’t like any other Ghostface” – The New York setting –

The Scream franchise has predominantly taken place in Woodsborough, with Scream 2 and 3 being the only exceptions, so when it was announced that Ghostface would be taking the big apple, I think all fans were excited to see our group of characters in a new environment. Scream VI really does utilise the New York setting to its advantage. We get to see a fun sequence on the subway, where our characters are avoiding Ghostface, whilst on a crowded Subway on Halloween night. It is such a tense and exciting set piece made all the better because of the time of year and New York setting. We also get to see a fun chase sequence in Gale Weather’s penthouse apartment, which ranks among one of my favourites in the Scream franchise to date. We also have a great sequence where Ghostface is chasing the Carpenter sisters around the streets of New York, where they take refuge in a convenience store. It's brutal and quite scary. I really liked the use of this setting.

Scream VI is exactly what I was hoping for from a new Scream film set in New York City. It's brutal, with Ghostface really showcasing just how savage and angry he/she can be. The reveal of the killer(s) is a lot of fun and is one of the highlights of the film. The updated setting does provide Scream fans with something a little different as well, which is what the franchise has continued to do over the years to prevent it from becoming stale. I had an absolute blast with this film, and it might just be my favourite sequel to date.
