Why Psycho Goreman Is Worth Your Time

Australia film distribution company ‘Umbrella Entertainment’ has been providing audiences with some of Hollywood’s best B-movies on DVD and Blu-Ray for over a decade. The company continues to introduce Australian audiences with fun, unique and different releases that they would have missed otherwise. In 2021, they released the highly anticipated ‘Psycho Goreman’ on Blu-Ray as a part of their ‘Beyond Genres’ collection. This collection has previously included titles: ‘Re-Animator’, ‘Bad Boy Bubby’ and ‘Razorback’. ‘Psycho Goreman’ tonally is very different from these films, playing off the nostalgia craze of the 1980s that Hollywood is obsessed with, but in the case of this film, it works beautifully. I am going to tell you why you need to watch this film as the chances are you probably haven’t even heard of it. So here is why you need to watch ‘Psycho Goreman’.

The costume – the costume of Psycho Goreman is fantastic. It feels appropriately cheesy and feels like it is straight out of the era it is clearly paying homage to. I loved the aesthetic of it and it was so refreshing to see a big, alien, costume that is not a CGI character and instead practical and authentic.

The tone – the films tone is refreshing, playing off the character's absurd views and blending science-fiction with comedy almost seamlessly. The film does not take itself too seriously and rather has fun with the premise, making it feel, unlike others that have been released recently. The film feels like a 1980s flick, with the tone reflecting that. It was quite refreshing to see.

The blood and gore – if you have been reading my blog posts, then you know I am a sucker for horror and the right use of blood and gore, and ‘Psycho Goreman’ does exactly that. The film plays with the blood and gore in a fun and humorous way. The film never takes itself seriously which works to its benefit. I like the over-the-top approach to the effects used in these sequences and the emphasis that writer/director Steven Kotanski, who previously helmed ‘The Void’. He comes from a make-up and special effects background and this shows as you can tell he really loves these effects and has a fun time with them.

All-in-all, ‘Psycho Goreman’ was just a lot of fun. It is not groundbreaking, but the film knows exactly what tone it is going for and knows how to have fun with its absurd premise and fun characters. It was a great little sci-fi film and anyone who is a fan of 1980s cinema and the b-movie genre, in general, will have an absolute blast with it.
