Fall Movie Review

Fall Movie Review

2022 has been a huge year for horror. With successes like ‘X’, ‘Terrifier 2’, ‘Pearl’, ‘Barbarian’, ‘Smile’, ‘Halloween Ends’ ‘Scream’ and ‘The Menu’, dominating both critically and commercially. Outside of these mega hits, we have also seen smaller successes such as the small-scale survival horror flick ‘Fall’. ‘Fall’ follows two climbers as they get stuck on top of a 2000 foot radio tower. With no cell reception (the irony of that), no supplies and the blistering heat and wind, the two girls must do whatever they can do survive. With a fun survival horror premise, the film was on my watch list and I am happy to say, ‘Fall’ was a tense, well-crafted thriller with a surprising amount of heart.

‘Fall’ surprised me for a number of reasons. I really enjoyed the two central performances from Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner. The two play best friends that are suffering the tragic loss of their friend and partner, Dan Connor played by Mason Gooding. Their relationship really is the crux of the entire story. The character drama that takes place during the film is elevated by the strong performances. As both characters grow weaker, and weaker with every passing day, we as audience begin about their wellbeing, making the film grow in intensity as the runtime ticks along.

The setting itself is unique and different. We have seen plenty of survival horror flicks over the years, including ‘Frozen’ in 2010, but ‘Fall’ takes the premise and really runs with it. As someone who is terrified of heights, I found myself to be constantly clutching my seat and covering my eyes as the film continued. The way that the height is captured in the film is truly terrifying. Director Scott Mann built a functioning radio tower, whilst not 2000 feet in the air in reality, was still built off the ground to emulate the true terror of having been stuck so high off the ground.

The tension whilst at times can run thin, due to the isolated setting and minimal characters in the film, the overall stakes never wain, making for a unique horror flick. ‘Fall’ remains one of my favourite movie going experiences of the year, truly gripping me and honestly scaring me from ever wanting to attempt such a climb. ‘Fall’ is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, make sure you head on over to your local Sanity or online to secure your copy today. This is the perfect movie night movie and would make for a great Christmas stocking stuffer as well.
