This is a rare recording of Kemp's visit to Dresden in the former East Germany. The two orchestras performed together in Dresden, where the old German sound remained, and Franz Konwitschny, who at the time was the chief conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and a maestro of East German music, played together. Their once-in-a-lifetime encounter rings out as a spectacular performance. Kemp's performance is unusually passionate and dramatic, and is supported by the orchestra's perfect ensemble playing with the full force of the strings. This purely German means of expression, which does not allow for even a single note of compromise, is almost unheard of in today's music world, and it is regrettable that this is the only recording they have made.
