Buddy Holly was a pioneer of Rock 'n' Roll and a major influence on The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Elton John. Tragically, he died aged 22 in a plane crash (Feb 3rd 1959), leaving his wife Maria Elena who he had been married to for less than one year. The day became known as "The Day the Music Died" famously referred to in Don McLean's song American Pie.
21/22nd October marks the 60th anniversary of his last recordings, which happened in a Decca studio and included the track True Love Ways, which he dedicated to his wife.
Buddy used to play the violin and shortly before his death, Buddy was experimenting with string orchestrations in his music.
Now, finally, with his widow as Executive Producer, an album of Buddy's music with full orchestrations from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is released on Decca, the original label to which he signed to in 1956.
"A poet – way ahead of his time" – Bob Dylan
"You could learn from Buddy Holly how to write songs, the way he put them together. He was a beautiful writer" - John Lennon
"It was either Buddy Holly or Elvis. It was split into 2 camps. The Elvis fans were the heavy leather boys and the Buddy Holly ones all somehow looked like him" – Keith Richards
"He made it ok to wear glasses!" – John Lennon
