For long suffering fans, it was decades in the making, the Sharks qualified for their first Grand Final in 19 years and claimed the first Premiership in the club's 50-year history. The heartache of last year’s Semi-final drubbing at the hands of the Cowboys was a distant memory, as the boys from the Shire reigned supreme on the NRL’s biggest day. With a perfect balance of experience, attacking brilliance and a tough uncompromising forward pack, the Sharks set about delivering on a season that promised so much. Up, up, Cronulla could be heard echoed throughout the Shire as history happened and the streets were painted in black, white and blue.

After tasting heartache the year before and falling agonisingly close to a maiden Premiership, the Sharks were on a mission to deliver in 2016, and at times the boys from the Shire looked unbeatable, stringing together a club record 15 straight victories. With one of the most potent backlines in the competition the Sharks had weapons on either side of the ruck, combined with a battle hardened forward pack made up of Paul Gallen, Wade Graham, Luke Lewis and Matt Prior the Sharks seldom found themselves on the back foot and could mix it with anyone in the Competition.

With the weight of history on their shoulders and the immortal words of Jack Gibson ringing in their ears the Sharks put on a show for the ages and sent their polarising hooker Michael Ennis out in the best possible way. The wily hooker played his role to perfection, combining with James Maloney and Chad Townsend to provide the creative spark the Sharks had built their season on. Harold Holt might not be coming back but the porch lights were well and truly on in the Shire, after 50 long years of waiting the fairy-tale was finally complete!
